Man charged after shooting wrong person while searching for girlfriend at Houston rental, police say

  • December 10, 2025

HOUSTON, Texas – Houston police say one man is now charged in a deadly shooting that killed a 23-year-old after two men opened fire at the wrong short-term rental unit in north Houston.

Laderrick Dwayne Dixon Jr., 21, is charged with murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Detectives say a second suspect, described only as a young, slim man, has not been identified.

The victim has been identified as 23-year-old Kevin Fowler.

According to HPD homicide detectives, officers responded to a shooting at a rental property in the 8000 block of Orebo Street around 10:30 p.m. on Nov. 21. When officers arrived, they found Fowler inside his vehicle with a gunshot wound. He was taken to HCA Houston Healthcare Northwest, where he died on Nov. 24.

Investigators say Dixon and the second suspect went to the rental property searching for Dixon’s girlfriend. The property had two units, and the men reportedly went to the wrong one, coming into contact with Fowler, who they believed may have been involved with the woman.

As Fowler drove away from the property, police say both suspects opened fire on his vehicle. Fowler was struck, but three others inside the car were not injured.

Detectives later identified Dixon as one of the shooters. He was already in the Harris County Jail on unrelated charges when he was charged in this case.

Anyone with information on the second suspect’s identity or whereabouts is urged to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS to remain anonymous.
