KETCHUM, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — The Blaine County Sheriff’s Office advised residents to stay alert after a bear cub sighting on the Fourth of July.
The cub was found in a tree in the backyard of a residence in Western Ketchum, according to the sheriff’s office. The Idaho Fish and Game Department was alerted, but said the bear does not currently pose a threat as long as it is left alone.
The sheriff’s office reminded residents in Blaine County to stay “bear aware,” advising people never to approach, feed or take pictures with a bear.
Idaho Fish and Game regularly reminds people to secure garbage, empty bird feeders, clean up fallen fruit and feed pets inside to avoid attracting bears. Not doing so could lead to bears becoming food-conditioned and potentially causing conflicts with people.
The sheriff’s office issued similar advice, encouraging Blaine County residents to help keep the bear safe as it wanders back to the woods.
