LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Los Angeles muralist, Phobik, has designed another t-shirt for a good cause!
This time it’s for ABC7’s 33rd annual Spark of Love toy drive.
ABC7 partnered with Smile South Central to identify muralists willing to donate their time and talent for the project.
Designing this year’s shirt allowed him to get in touch with this younger self.
“It was just putting out there an image I would like to see when I was a kid,” said Phobik. “There was a ton of clothes that had awesome graphics growing up, and I just wanted to play with that.”
His creative process started when he imagined his designs through a child’s imagination.
“I definitely had to tap into my inner child to be like what would I want to see,” he added. “
Phobik even took us back to the toys he couldn’t wait to see under tree when he was a child.
“I liked Teen Mutant Ninja Turtles, Jurassic P ark, I always wanted the T-Rex,” he excitedly added.
He loves that all of the toys from his childhood is making a comeback for the new generation to enjoy.
“The thing now is that they’re redoing a lot of these toys,” said Phobik. “I get to see it every time I go to Target or a store. It’s so hard not to buy them.”
Compared to his previous designs, Phobik turned up the fun a couple notches.
“This time around I wanted to get more playful with it, more graphics, more colors. I guess the word I’m looking for is being more kid friendly.”
In this season of giving, Phobik shows nothing but gratitude.
“I appreciate the opportunity to show my art,” he said. “I wanted to give back and I hope everyone likes it.”
