A swath of Fifth Avenue will transform into a pedestrian-only promenade this Sunday as part of the city’s annual Holiday Open Streets.

The event, now in its fourth year, will run from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., closing Fifth Avenue to vehicles between 48th and 57th streets, the city’s Department of Transportation said.

Adjacent cross streets from 49th to 56th streets also be open only to pedestrians between Fifth and Sixth avenues, according to the DOT.

Drivers are encouraged to plan alternate routes between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.

“Midtown Manhattan is one of the best places in the world to celebrate the holiday season, and we’re bringing some car-free holiday cheer to Fifth Avenue,” DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez said in a statement. “Providing a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone who visits iconic locations like Rockefeller Plaza, Radio City Music Hall, and Central Park during the holiday season is not only a cause for celebration for pedestrians, but also for local businesses that will see additional foot traffic.”

The Fifth Avenue Association said the event will feature holiday décor, live entertainment, food and drink offerings and unique activities.

“The annual Holiday Open Streets on Fifth Avenue is a festive tradition that New Yorkers and visitors from around the world look forward to each holiday season,” Edward Pincar Jr., president of the Fifth Avenue Association, said in a statement. “Open Streets create a unique opportunity for visitors to experience the holiday magic on the city’s most iconic retail corridor while enjoying live musical performances, immersive shopping pop-ups and festive holiday décor and window displays.”

The DOT noted that through Jan. 4, 2026, West 49th and West 50th streets will be closed to cars and open to pedestrians between Fifth and Sixth avenues daily from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m.
