The incident unfolded around 4 p.m. at the Artisan at Willow Springs apartments off Gembler Road and Willow Springs, where deputies from Precinct 4 were attempting to serve an eviction notice.

“They’d been working on the door for some time with building maintenance, trying to get the door opened,” Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said. “Once they got the door open, the suspect reportedly opened fire. One of the deputy constables was hit, but he was wearing body armor and is expected to be okay.”

The deputy constable injured in the shooting, Darrell Ward, was struck but protected by his body armor and is stayed on the scene after being checked out by medical personnel.

Gerber barricaded himself inside the apartment for several hours before surrendering to a combined Bexar County and SAPD SWAT team. Tear gas was deployed during the standoff, and he exited the apartment safely and was taken into custody. Authorities confirmed he used a handgun during the incident and that no one else was injured. Surrounding apartments were evacuated as a precaution.

Investigators noted Gerber has a military background, though details about his service remain unclear.

If granted bond, Gerber would face strict conditions, including full house arrest, random alcohol and drug testing, no possession of firearms, and weekly phone check-ins with authorities.
