Iowa school district cancels classes Friday due to whooping cough

Classes are canceled at a southern Iowa school district Friday, Dec. 12, after a case of whooping cough was confirmed. Officials with Davis County Community School District in Bloomfield said Thursday afternoon that the case of whooping cough, also called pertussis, was confirmed at the elementary school. Pertussis is a contagious respiratory illness. It gets its name based on the “whooping” someone makes while gasping for air after coughing.”School will be canceled (Friday) as we continue our investigation and receive guidance from public health officials,” Superintendent Megan Christiansen said in a post on the district’s Facebook page. School events and activities have been canceled or postponed Thursday, Friday and Saturday, according to the school’s activities calendar.Christiansen is also superintendent of Moulton-Udell Community School District, which canceled classes Tuesday and Wednesday due to 30% of students and staff being out — many with influenza A.The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services recommends that Iowans take the following steps to stay healthy this winter:Stay home and avoid social gatherings if you or your children are sick.Clean high-touch surfaces in your home frequently with household disinfectants.Practice hand hygiene frequently with soap and water or hand sanitizer for at least 20 seconds.Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue, or if a tissue is not available, cover them with an upper shirt sleeve, not a hand.Keep children home from daycare or school who have fever, cough, congestion, runny nose, or sore throat, and until they are fever-free for 24 hours without medications that reduce fever.If you or a loved one is sick and needs medical care, contact your healthcare provider. Your healthcare provider can offer advice on whether you or your child needs to be evaluated in person, tested for flu or other respiratory diseases, and the best location for care.Iowa vaccination rates for whooping coughIowa’s 2-year-old immunization rates for diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis have risen since 2015, from 68.6% in that year to 89.5% in 2024, according to data on the Iowa Health and Human Services website.In Davis County, the 2-year-old rate is lower for this vaccine, according to HHS.
