(NEW YORK, NY, 12/11/25) — he New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY), a chapter of the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today condemned graffiti discovered in a study room at New York University’s Dibner Library in Brooklyn, which included anti-Black, anti-Indian, and antisemitic slurs and symbols.
According to media reports, NYU Campus Safety and the New York City Police Department are investigating the incident as a hate crime after discovering profanities targeting various races, the N-word slur, and a swastika defaced on the walls of a study room. The graffiti was first publicized through student social media accounts and drew immediate concern from student organizations and campus communities.

In a statement, Afaf Nasher, Esq., CAIR-NY Executive Director, said:
“Hate-filled vandalism of any marginalized community destroys the sense of safety and belonging that every student deserves. Acts like this do not occur in a vacuum; they reflect a climate in which bigotry is growing. We stand in solidarity with the students and communities harmed by this incident and urge a full, transparent investigation to ensure accountability. Universities must remain places of learning, not fear.”
CAIR-NY urges students and community members to report any bias-motivated incidents to campus authorities, local law enforcement, and civil rights organizations.
NYU has been added to CAIR’s list of designated ‘Hostile Campuses’ across the country for suppressing students who advocate against apartheid, genocide, and U.S.-backed military occupation. In the state of New York, Columbia University, and Cornell University are also included on this list.
