NEW YORK (PIX11) — The five boroughs were placed under a weather alert for the weekend by the Office of Emergency Management on Saturday.

It comes as the National Weather Service warns of hazardous weather from a fast-moving snowstorm expected to hit the city beginning Saturday around 10 p.m. and lasting until early Sunday.

New York City is projected to see anywhere from 2 to 3.5 inches of snow, with the heaviest accumulation in areas like Staten Island, southern Brooklyn, and southeastern Queens.

“While we are not expecting a major storm, we’re expecting snow will stick to roads and sidewalks,” said NYCEM Commissioner Zach Iscol. “That first accumulating snowfall can catch people off guard and quickly create slippery conditions.”

The Department of Sanitation has already begun pre-treating roads with brine and has more than 700 salt spreaders ready to deploy when the storm begins.

“All New York City agencies are prepared for this system, and we continue to monitor conditions closely,” said New York City Mayor Eric Adams. “New Yorkers should all prepare too — avoid driving and give yourself extra travel time with public transit if you do need to travel.”

MTA workers were deployed to salt and clear surfaces throughout the system in anticipation of the storm. The transit agency also assured that they’re prepared to send out debris and deicer trains to ensure service continues with few weather-related interruptions.

Bus service will be adjusted based on road conditions around the city, while subway trains, the Long Island Rail Road and MetroNorth are expected to run according to schedule.

“We urge everyone to use caution when traveling, check on neighbors who may need assistance, and stay informed by signing up for Notify NYC,” said Iscol.
