BUENA PARK —  Lane Brown left. Lane Brown right. Lane Brown up the middle.

And when he wasn’t running, it was Winters High School quarterback Lane Brown through the air.

The senior, who entered the game with 2,069 yards passing and 1,906 rushing, gashed Morse for 154 yards rushing and three touchdowns and threw a TD pass, leading Winters to a 28-7 win over the Tigers on Saturday at Buena Park High School to claim the 6-A state championship.

“He’s a lot bigger than I thought,” Morse coach Tracy McNair said of the 6-foot-3, 185-pound Brown. “He is not really fast, but he has good vision, runs hard, and he’s tough.”

Morse’s Gael Diaz recovered an onside kick to open the game, but the Tigers (10-5) were forced to punt.

Brown then led Winters (14-1) on a five-play, 73-yard drive, hitting Anthony Matamoras with an 18-yard scoring pass.

After the Winters kickoff went out of bounds, Morse took over at midfield and moved to the Lions’ 17. But a bad snap was recovered by Jake Woods of Winters.

Brown then carried eight times on an 11-play drive, scoring on an 8-yard run.

Morse was stopped on fourth-down try at the Winters 46 and Brown made the Tigers pay, scoring on a 1-yard run.

“I never underestimate an opponent,” said Morse running back/defensive back Superior Garror. “He’s every bit as good as we thought. He’s tough.”

Morse got back in the game with an eight-play, 51-yard drive with Garror going the final 4 yards, but after an exchange of punts, Winters put the game away early in the fourth quarter with an 11-play, 71-yard drive.

Brown scored on a 14-yard run.

Morse played the second half without quarterback Ethan Esmailian, who injured his left knee while being sacked and was on crutches.

Without Esmailian, Morse went to a Wildcat offense with Garror and Alex Smith taking direct snaps.

“We had a lot of guys crying, and that’s OK,” McNair said. “It shows it means something. We had some injuries and that hurt us, but that’s not an excuse. We won one game last season, so we’ve come a long way. The program is definitely headed in the right direction.”

Brown rushed 25 times for 154 yards and completed 5 of 10 passes for 52 yards.

Joe Hawkins rushed eight times for 103 yards for the Lions with runs of 36, 24, 14 and 14 yards.

Overall, Winters rushed 39 times for 266 yards.

Garror had 19 carries for 83 yards, finishing the season with 2,284 yards.

But with a bad snap and a 10-yard loss on a fake punt, Morse had 29 rushing attempts for 64 yards. They completed 2 of 7 passes for 11 yards.

“They were more physical and more aggressive than I thought,” Garror said. “We didn’t play our best, but today they were the better team.”
