Firefighters, police officers help save pup stuck in Tempe canal

  • December 14, 2025

TEMPE, AZ (AZFamily) — What started as a desperate swim in a Tempe canal ended with teamwork, cheers, and one safe pup.

According to Tempe police, officers got a call earlier this week about a dog stuck in a canal. The dog seemed to be getting tired from swimming, so officers and Tempe Fire Medical Rescue all jumped in to help save the struggling pooch.

In the video, you can hear one first responder say, “Aw! Come on, baby!” once they spot the distressed dog. A few moments later, more crews come to the rescue and begin work to pull the puppy out of the water.

“Come on, you can do it,” the same officer is heard in the video.

“This rescue shows what teamwork looks like, police and fire working side by side to save a life,” police said in the social video.

Once out of the water, police took the pup to the vet to make sure the dog was OK.

“One safe dog, one happy ending, and a whole lot of heart behind the badges,” Tempe police wrote on Facebook. Yes, indeed!
