The Trump administration’s recent focus on immigration enforcement against members of the Afghan community is causing anxiety in the Capital Region. Democratic U.S. Rep. Paul Tonko and immigration advocates gathered Monday to criticize the Trump administration’s stance on the issue, which has evolved in the wake of a shooting which killed West Virginia National Guard Specialist Sarah Beckstrom and wounded Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe. Both were shot by a man who had come to the US from Afghanistan in 2021. Also, RoAnn Destito is a former member of the state Assembly as well as the former commissioner of the Office of General Services. She was recently elected president of the Retired Public Employees Association, which represents over 500,000 retirees, and their spouses and beneficiaries. She spoke with Capital Tonight’s Susan Arbetter about raising COLAs for state worker retirees.
