In a busy few days, Scottsdale Police officers responded to a domestic violence suspect barricaded in his home, a student who allegedly sent a threatening message and a fatal bicycle accident.

Late afternoon Dec. 8, bicyclist Devin Curran died after being hit by a car near Thompson Peak Parkway and Raintree Drive.

“The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene,” according to Officer Aaron Bolin. “Speed and impairment are not considered factors in the collision.”

No arrests have been made.

The roadway was closed for several hours while detectives investigated the collision.

Two days earlier, a boy was arrested for sending a threatening message to Coronado High School.

Bolin described the incident as “a one-sentence written threat was sent to Coronado High School’s direct message social media account by a juvenile suspect.”

“During the investigation, it was determined that a single person was involved in making the written threat; it was not part of any planned or coordinated threat with others, and the suspect does not have the means to physically carry out the written threat,” Bolin said.

When the school opened after the weekend, Bolin said there was an increased police presence “out of an abundance of caution.”

“Both the Scottsdale Police Department and the Scottsdale Unified School District take all threats to the schools very seriously,” Bolin said.

“This case was thoroughly investigated by detectives and patrol officers, resulting in the arrest of the suspect and the subsequent criminal charges they will face through the court system.”

On Dec. 7, officers arrested Andrew Shadid, 57, on “several domestic violence-related charges,” according to Bolin.

Police were called to a south Scottsdale residence near 70th Street and McDowell Road after a woman reported Shadid had forced his way into her residence, assaulted her and threatened to ignite the home on fire with gasoline, according to Bolin.

“Shadid told the victim he would kill her and himself if police showed up,” Bolin said.

An existing court order prohibited Shadid from being at the residence.

The woman was able to safely escape from the residence before police arrived.

Police attempted contact with Shadid in numerous ways to get him to exit the residence and peacefully surrender, Bolin said.

“Police created a perimeter around the house, and barricade procedures were initiated,” Bolin said. “Neighborhood roadways were blocked, and nearby homes were evacuated.”

Police crisis negotiators “attempted numerous times and used different methods to establish contact with Shadid and persuade him to peacefully surrender and leave the residence,” Bolin said.

“Shadid never communicated back with Scottsdale Police and never indicated any attempt to surrender.”

After nearly four hours, Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) officers entered the home and eventually located Shadid in a bedroom. He told the SWAT team he was armed, Boliin said. A police canine bit the man, followed by officers arresting him.

“The victim is receiving assistance from Scottsdale Police Crisis Intervention Services,” Bolin said.
