Fans of the famous British writer Jane Austen will have a chance to step into the world of her works early in 2026, Arlington Museum of Art event organizers announced Dec. 16.
The exhibit, “Dressed for the Drawing Room: Fashion in Jane Austen’s World,” commemorates Austen’s 250th birthday by displaying costumes from film adaptations of some of her most famous works.
“Literature, film and costuming are all important expressions of time, place and identity,” says AMA director of exhibitions Kendall Quirk, “Jane Austen’s novels are full of observations of the time period she was living in.”
The exhibit is being co-hosted by the museum and the Jane Austen Society of North America – North Texas Chapter, a nonprofit staffed by volunteers who look to keep Austen’s writing alive and help people better understand her works.
The costumes that will be on display will come from two films based on Austen’s writing:
Both films are set in the Regency era, between 1811 and 1820, which is prominently featured in much of Austen’s writing.
“Using costume to portray these subtleties of the Regency era highlights how important details are,” Quirk said. “We hope visitors experience costumes from their favorite Austen films and gain a better understanding of what each costume signified for the characters.”
The exhibit will open its doors on Jan. 9, 2026, and will close on March 22, 2026. The exhibit will also be free of charge, organizers said.
