1. Adrienne Adams looks at incoming administration, relationship with Mayor Adams
Ahead of the final stated City Council meeting of the year on Thursday, NY1 political anchor Errol Louis sat down with outgoing City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams for a wide-ranging exit interview.
She spoke about the several contentious pieces of legislation on the docket, potential consequences for City Councilmember Vickie Paladino after her Islamophobic comments, Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s readiness to lead the city and her time leading the first women-majority City Council. The council speaker also discussed her strained relationship with Mayor Eric Adams and what job she may be eyeing next.
2. Inside a Gaza hospital with a New York surgeon
For three decades, Dr. Christopher Johnson has performed reconstructive plastic surgeries around the world — but the cases he treated in Gaza carry an emotional impact unlike anything else in his career.
“I feel teary right now, just to even think about it,” Johnson said. “I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to process what I did. I’ve decided to kind of compartmentalize it.”
For 17 days, he operated inside Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis, one of the last hospitals still operating in the city. The mission was coordinated through the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund.
3. Council to vote on dozens of bills related to housing, vendors, police transparency
The City Council could be going out with a bang on Thursday, while holding its final stated meeting of the session. As many as 70 bills could be voted on, with some already facing opposition.
Councilmember Sandy Nurse’s bill, known as COPA, would allow for a trusted list of non-for-profit housing groups first bid at buying distressed buildings with five or more units. Other legislation set to be voted on would clarify the city’s sanctuary laws and prohibit from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement from setting up office’s in the city’s jails.
