PHOENIX — The city of Scottsdale will soon take on improvements to a highly trafficked stretch of Thomas Road, and it received a $17.4 million grant announced on Wednesday that will cover more than two-thirds of the project’s cost.

The city’s rehabilitation of Thomas Road will focus on about two miles between 56th and 74th streets, which includes the Scottsdale Road intersection.

It’s expected to cost $24.8 million in total, and the city has pledged to cover $7.5 million.

“This project represents a major investment in the city’s transportation infrastructure,” Scottsdale City Manager Greg Caton said in the announcement. “We have allocated more than $40 million over the next year to include our current street conditions, and with this additional funding, we are investing well over $65 million to improve our transportation network.”

The grant comes from the Maricopa Association of Governments’ (MAG) Arterial Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Program for the next three fiscal years.

“We are grateful to MAG for their support in helping us to repair this critical, aging infrastructure and improving the safety of our community,” Caton added.

Design work is scheduled to begin early 2026 with early 2028 eyed for the beginning of construction.

What improvements will Scottsdale’s Thomas Road project include?

The project aims to modernize multiple aspects of the stretch the city called outdated, including:

– Reconstructing the roadway

– New right turn lane at 68th Street intersection

– Replacing outdated traffic signals

– Improving grading and drainage

– Installing ADA-compliant pedestrian ramps

– Restoring lane striping to current configuration

Water and sewer systems beneath the road will be upgraded in a separate project, according to the city.
