HOUSTON – A burglary suspect was shot to death by authorities late Sunday night in southeast Houston.

It happened just after midnight when Asst. Chief Bryant with the Houston Police Department said officers got a call about a burglary on Bellfort Avenue near Highway 35. Responding investigators were able to meet with a victim, who claimed to have been assaulted, and shared information on the suspect’s whereabouts.
Police were able to find the burglary suspect on Rook and Waltrip Street, but a brief chase ensued.

HPD Asst. Chief Bryant confirmed officers saw a gun in his hand. An HPD sergeant nearby, responding to another call, came across the burglary suspect and “gave him verbal commands,” which he ignored, and was shot by the sergeant, killing him.
It’s unclear (based on preliminary information) if the burglary suspect fired his weapon, but investigators did recover his gun from the scene.

Per protocol, the sergeant has been placed on administrative leave while an internal and external investigation is conducted.
