Ruben Amorim can take pride in the performance, with Manchester United dominant for large periods of the match. But failing to pick up any points means the Red Devils will spend Christmas seventh in the Premier League table.

Last week, Ruben Amorim used a 4-3-3 system in the chaotic draw to Bournemouth. It was the first time we have seen the United boss drastically stray from his 3-4-2-1 shape.
Against Villa, Amorim showed his tactical flexibility by using a fluid three-man midfield to block Villa’s build-up.
Amorim appeared to spring a surprise on Unai Emery, who was outclassed tactically.
Mount and Dalot switch sides
A key part of Amorim’s tactical switch-up saw Mason Mount and Diogo Dalot move to the right flank.
With Amad Diallo, Bryan Mbeumo and Noussair Mazraoui absent, Amorim was forced to chop and change. It was the in-form duo of Mount and Dalot who were chosen to fill the gaps.
Mount, in particular, had a unique role, dropping into midfield alongside Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte.
Bruno Fernandes suffers injury
Since joining in 2020, Fernandes’ injury record at United has been nothing short of freakish.
The Portuguese playmaker has been ever-present for the past five years, but for the first time in a United shirt, he pulled up with a hamstring injury in the first half.
Fernandes attempted to continue, and he battled on for the remainder of the first half before being replaced at half-time.
Lisandro Martinez experiment
Before kick-off, it was confirmed that Kobbie Mainoo has suffered an injury and was therefore left out of the matchday squad.
Has Kobbie Mainoo played his last game for Manchester United this season?

With Casemiro suspended and Fernandes suffering a rare injury, Amorim was left with very few midfield options.
It was Lisandro Martinez who got the nod to step into midfield for the first time. Amorim spoke about Martinez in midfield last month, and he decided to experiment at Villa Park.
United’s World Cup winner stepped in and did a very impressive job. Moving forward, he could be an option as a No.6.
Ruben Amorim shows academy trust
Amorim’s comments about academy stars sparked conversation this week, but both Shea Lacey and Jack Fletcher made their debut at Villa Park.
Fletcher, who is the son of Darren Fletcher, came on to replace Manuel Ugarte with 20 minutes remaining, while Lacey was brought on with seven minutes remaining to push for an equaliser.
Fletcher and Lacey become United’s 255th and 256th academy graduates.
