On Saturday, Dallas police officers fatally shot a murder suspect in Mesquite. Here’s what we know so far.

The Dallas Police Department posted on X at about 1 p.m. on Saturday that an “officer-involved shooting” incident occurred near Town East Boulevard and the Lyndon B. Johnson Freeway.

Traffic stop turned into an armed encounter

The department said on the X post that officers were trying to make a traffic stop, which led to an armed confrontation.

The suspect died following the encounter, according to the authorities. Police did not identify the suspect.

No police officers were injured in the incident.

Traffic jam on Interstate 635 in Mesquite

Traffic was delayed on highways near Town East Mall in Mesquite following the shooting incident Saturday afternoon.

Texas Department of Transportation’s traffic camera showed traffic building up on northbound lanes of Interstate 635, miles before the Town East exit.

Mesquite police said the east service road of I-635 between Towne Centre and Town East will be closed for the duration of the investigation on Saturday.

Started with homicide suspect chase

On Saturday morning at about 10:15 a.m., Dallas police officers were dispatched to the 9000 block of Markville Drive, where they found a woman had been shot and the suspected shooter had fled the scene.

Police said the woman was taken to a hospital, where she later died. Her identity was not released.

The encounter

Mesquite police officials said Dallas officers were conducting surveillance on the suspect, shortly before noon, when they initiated a “high-risk traffic stop” on the east service road of Interstate 635.

The suspect allegedly got out of their vehicle, armed, Dallas police said, and shots were fired. The suspect, who was not identified, died from the injuries. No officers were hurt in the incident.
