Studies and surveys rank Texas among the lowest nationwide in women’s health care.
A 2024 study from The Commonwealth Fund ranked Texas second to last in the country for overall women’s health. Texas scored in the bottom half of states for health outcomes; health care quality and prevention; and coverage, access and affordability.
The same year, a study from ValuePenguin had Texas at second to last nationwide for access to prenatal and maternal care. A survey published by SmileHub in February placed the state at 46 out of 50 for women’s health.
State officials have worked to improve women’s health outcomes in Texas. In 2016, the state launched Healthy Texas Women, a program that provides women’s health and family planning services at no cost to those eligible.
The Texas Legislature in July approved additional funding for the program.
