OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – Luke Lindenmeyer’s life hasn’t gone exactly to plan.
“I thought I’d be playing basketball, honestly,” he said.
But he wouldn’t want it any other way.
“It’s just incredible because I didn’t see myself being here at all. And now that I’m here I don’t know what else I’d be doing, where else I’d be,” said Lindenmeyer, junior tight end.
Luke’s gone from a walk-on from La Vista and a proud Papio program to Nebraska’s starting tight end.
“Everything was, like, new to me,” Lindenmeyer said.
Coaches recognize his development
“He knows he’s the guy. Now he knows he’s No. 1 and he’s playing like it. He has the ability to get open, he has the ability to catch it, he has the ability to get upfield and get us first downs,” said Dana Holgorsen, offensive coordinator.
Lindenmeyer earned an All-Big Ten honorable mention selection.
“He’s a good football player, man. I mean, I sat up here in front of you guys last year in November and said I thought he was a good football player,” Holgorsen said.
But it’s been a winding journey.
“Being part of a military family, I got pretty good at adapting to new places. Even when coach Frost was fired and we had a bunch of position coaching changes and a bunch of offensive changes, I was able to adapt right away. I think that’s what’s been able to help me separate,” Lindenmeyer said.
Best season yet
Separate by having his best season with over 300 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
“Every rep I have in a practice and in a game, I’m getting better. Whether it be footwork or running after the catch, there’s always something that you can improve on and you’re always chasing that perfection — knowing I’ll never reach it, but just chasing that is making me so much better,” he said.
And as his senior season nears, one thing stands out about being a Husker.
“Just how much it means to all Nebraskans, especially the kids, and just how much of a role model I can be,” Lindenmeyer said.
