The Avalanche have to make yet another hire to their coaching staff this summer.
After spending two years as the team’s skills coach, Toby Petersen has left the organization to accept a job as the Dallas Stars’ AHL head coach.

Petersen, 46, spent the last seven years of his playing career with the Dallas and Texas Stars before transitioning to coaching. He was an AHL assistant coach for six years before Colorado hired him in 2023 following the departure of Shawn Allard.
He’s the fourth coach within the organization to depart this summer. It started with Ray Bennett, an assistant on Jared Bednar’s staff, who was fired following the first-round playoff exit to the Dallas Stars.

In the following weeks, AHL associate coach Dan Hinote was hired to the Tampa Bay Lightning’s NHL bench and head coach Aaron Schneekloth joined the Seattle Kraken staff.
The only hire that’s been made for Colorado is Mark Letestu as the Colorado Eagles AHL head coach. Bennett, Hinote, and now Petersen have not yet been replaced.
