SAN ANTONIO – A man died early Wednesday morning after getting shot in the chest by his girlfriend, according to Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar.
Deputies were called out for a reported shooting Wednesday morning at 6:30 a.m. in Far West Bexar County.
“Caller at the residence reported there that a female had shot a male,” explained Sheriff Salazar.
When they arrived at the home on the 100-block of Mallow Drive, they discovered a man with a gunshot wound to the chest.
Deputies tried to administer lifesaving measures but were unsuccessful and the 42-year-old man was pronounced dead on the scene.
Deputies then arrested 36-year-old Courtney Renee Hooper on murder charges. She was in a dating relationship with the victim, and an argument over a car and a cellphone escalated into a shooting, according to Sheriff Salazar.
Hooper provided deputies with a video that she thought would exonerate her, but Sheriff Salazar says the video just made her look more guilty.
“Showed at least some of the disturbance that led to this murder,” said Salazar.
Hooper maintains that she was just protecting herself.
Sheriff Salazar says Hooper’s children were in the home. They are now being cared for by Child Protective Services.
Salazar also said that in addition to the murder charges there may also be drug-related charges and called the investigation ‘clear cut’.
“She does have some prior charges,” said Salazar. “Additionally, we found some narcotics.”
Salazar also added that there were extensive calls for dating violence at the property.
“A lot of charges of dating related type disturbances where we were called to to resolve it, and it was with other other gentlemen, other than this, this victim here. So apparently there is some sort of a pattern of behavior on the part of this suspect, but nothing ever that led to this extent,” said Salazar. “We’re asking anyone with any any follow up information that we need to know about to please give us a call at 210-335-6000.”
The incident is one of three domestic-related homicides in the last seven days. Salazar emphasized the escalation of domestic violence during the holiday season and the need for intervention.
“There is going to be one family in San Antonio that’s going to be short one family member tonight because of this tragedy,” said Salazar.
