PHOENIX — Rain continued to fall on West Valley cities on Wednesday evening, while metro Phoenix dried out in the last hours of sunlight on Christmas Eve.

Sun City West, Litchfield Park’s Luke Air Force Base and Anthem all observed 0.04 inches of precipitation as of 5:04 p.m., according to data from Flood Control District of Maricopa County.

The chance for rain was 20% on Wednesday afternoon and the National Weather Service forecasts it to increase to 40% through the night, with the greatest chance just after 1 a.m. on Christmas.

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, which NWS uses for official mercury readings, reached 69 degrees on Wednesday at 4:16 p.m. for a high four degrees above normal for Dec. 24.

Valley weather conditions remained warmer than usual but paled in comparison to three straight days of daily record highs to begin Christmas week.

Christmas Day rain forecast, expected conditions rest of week

The current NWS forecast has a 30% chance of rain on Thursday for metro Phoenix, with any observable precipitation expected prior to 10 a.m.

A 20% chance will hold into the night before partly cloudy conditions on Friday morning.

It is expected to reach 75 degrees on Christmas, with the sun likely to break through clouds for a pleasant overall holiday.

The sun should break all the way out through the weekend, as partly and mostly sunny conditions are in the forecast for Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Daily highs are 69 and 70 degrees with calm winds peaking around 5 mph.
