1. City considers permanent park access for e-vehicles
E-bikes and e-scooters may become a permanent fixture in New York City parks.
A proposed rule from the city’s Parks Department would build on an existing pilot program that allows e-bikes and e-scooters to operate on park drives and greenways, with regulations in place.
2. Shark sightings close Rockaway beaches over Fourth of July weekend
Sections of Rockaway Beach were closed repeatedly over the Fourth of July weekend after drones spotted sharks swimming dangerously close to shore, city officials said.
Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Kaz Daughtry posted a video on Saturday showing a shark just 100 feet from swimmers near Beach 113th Street, prompting an hour-long closure.
The sighting was one of several throughout the holiday weekend, forcing officials to clear the water multiple times.
3. New York Knicks hire Mike Brown, a two-time NBA Coach of the Year
The New York Knicks hired Mike Brown on Monday, turning to the two-time NBA Coach of the Year after firing Tom Thibodeau.
The Knicks offered the job to Brown last week and announced Monday that he would be taking over the team that reached the Eastern Conference finals last season for the first time in 25 years.
4. Trump immigration policies impact Little Haiti
Local businesses in Little Haiti are feeling the impacts of two different Trump administration policies — the upcoming end to Temporary Protected Status for Haitian immigrants and a full travel ban placed on Haiti.
Many Haitian immigrants in Little Haiti, even those who are in the city legally, are fearful of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
5. Trump begins announcing new tariffs on trading partners, including Japan and South Korea
U.S. markets saw steep drops as President Donald Trump began announcing unilateral 25% tariffs on all imports from key trading partners Japan and South Korea shortly after noon Monday. Hours later, he announced additional tariffs ranging from 25% to 40% on Kazakhstan, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar and South Africa.
The new tariffs are slated to be implemented by Aug. 1, Trump wrote.
6. Columbia grads create app that teaches Gen Z about investing
Alinea Invest is an app designed to help first-time investors learn more about saving for retirement and maximizing their assets.
Anam Lakhani, one of the company’s founders, joined “The Rush Hour” on Monday to discuss the importance of investing early and financial literacy.
