The 40-year-old Tarrant County jail inmate who died Sunday after being found unresponsive in her cell has been identified.

Officials said Shuntae Lavette Broadus received lifesaving care from the medical staff at John Peter Smith Correctional Health after she was found unresponsive on Dec. 21, according to a previous statement from the Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office.

She was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital for additional care, the statement said.

Broadus died in the hospital’s intensive care unit around 4:11 p.m., according to the Tarrant County medical examiner. Her cause and manner of death are still pending.

No further information was immediately available.

Broadus initially was arrested by Arlington police on robbery charges and taken to the Tarrant County jail, where she had been since Aug. 3, 2025.

Broadus’ death marks the latest in a string of in-custody deaths at the Tarrant County jail. The two most recent were those of a 57-year-old woman in April and a 61-year-old man in August.
