Light rain showers, possibly mixed with sleet, are moving through the D.C. region, making for a dreary Boxing Day.
Near the D.C. metro area, the weather will be mostly rainy. But a wintry mix is possible in northern Maryland. Freezing rain could impact areas along and north of Interstate 70.
A winter weather advisory is in effect for Carroll, Frederick, Washington and parts of Howard counties in Maryland from noon until 7 p.m.
7News First Alert Meteorologist Matthew Ritter told WTOP the weather system brings “showers mixed in with some light freezing rain and sleet” by the afternoon, but that “with borderline air temperatures and a somewhat unfrozen ground, icing conditions are not expected to be widespread.”
Most parts of the D.C. area are expected to stay above freezing on Friday.
“The ice storm warning also looks marginal if warmer air wins out this evening, however, western Pendleton and all of Highland may have slippery areas,” said 7News First Alert Meteorologist Steve Rudin.
Ritter said residents in Frederick and Carroll counties can expect to see a rain-sleet mixture as early as 2 p.m. He noted that a sleet mixture could last for Montgomery, Howard and Anne Arundel counties until 8 p.m.
While D.C.-area roads are not anticipated to be overcome with icy conditions, the National Weather Service is urging drivers to be cautious.
The wet weather is expected to move out by midnight.
Friday temperatures will peak in the low 40s before slumping slightly to the 30s by nightfall.
For Saturday, conditions will feature cloudy skies with temperatures in the mid 40s, which will carry into Sunday.
Another round of rain is forecast for late Sunday.
Looking ahead to Monday, make sure to stay bundled up. While the day will be mostly cloudy and breezy, a cold front will force temperatures to drop.
