PHILADELPHIA — Residents in Manayunk faced sheets of ice and a slushy mess Saturday after a water main break sent water gushing down neighborhood streets already coated in freezing conditions.
Water shot several feet into the air on Roxborough Avenue as an 8-inch main ruptured, residents said. “Started off pretty small, about 2, 3 feet, and then started shooting up way in the air above the power lines,” said Joshua Gordon of Manayunk.
The flowing water quickly mixed with the icy streets, creating thick, frozen layers on sidewalks, cars, and steep neighborhood hills.
“That’s going to be an ice rink, I’m sure – probably already is,” Gordon said.
Some neighbors said the conditions were among the worst they’d seen in years. “I feel like we haven’t had an ice storm like this in a long time,” said Kristen Goreski of Manayunk.
As Philadelphia Water Department crews worked to repair the break, residents grabbed boots and shovels to chip through the accumulating ice.
“It’s about a half inch thick, and it’s starting to melt, so it’s getting very slippery,” said Marty Costello, who described having to chip ice from his car door and lock.
He and his neighbor, Cindy Papa, spent the afternoon clearing sidewalks and windshields.
“They’re always cleaning up and shoveling. We always help each other over here,” Papa said.
Costello said the safest choice for many was to stay indoors. “The NFL’s on, college football – it’s a great day to be inside or not have to drive, I should say,” he said.
About 50 properties lost water service for most of the day due to the break.
Residents still without service or with related concerns are encouraged to contact the Philadelphia Water Department.
