The ECHL and the Professional Hockey Players’ Association announced a tentative agreement on Dec. 27 to reach a new collective bargaining agreement, which would end the players’ association strike after fewer than 48 hours and return the Jacksonville Icemen to competition.
The tentative deal must receive the approval of the hockey league’s board of governors as well as the players’ association’s ECHL members.
Under the preliminary deal, players will report to their teams and prepare for the season to resume.
Exact terms of the agreement are not yet disclosed.
The strike took effect Dec. 26 after a breakdown in negotiations between the league and the union, with key issues including travel, equipment and holiday breaks. The ECHL had been operating without an updated collective bargaining agreement all season after the previous version expired in the summer.
The work stoppage wiped three Icemen games off the schedule, Dec. 26 at home against the Orlando Solar Bears and Dec. 27-28 on the road against the Greenville Swamp Rabbits. It’s not yet clear when these games will be made up.
