Twenty high school teams participated in the wrestling meet. UHS was the only Class 4A high school vying in a field of Class 6A and 5A high schools.
Three UHS wrestlers captured first-place honors, including Alex Rodriguez in the men’s 120-pound class, Carlos Rodriguez in the men’s 144-pound class, and Rogelio Perez in the men’s 157-pound class.
Daniel Mendoza, vying in the men’s 106-pound class, and Rafael Perez, vying in the men’s 215-pound class, each claimed third-place honors.
“As a team, we did an awesome job,” said Coach Kenneth Childs. “The two schools that placed ahead of us were larger schools and they had a full roster of athletes competing.”
UHS had four wrestlers competing in the women’s division of the meet. The Lobos finished 10th in the women’s team standings.
Emily Gonzalez took second place in he women’s 120-pound division and Kenzie Cantu finished second in the women’s 190-pound class.
“That’s not bad for a couple of scrappy athletes from little ol’ Class 4A Uvalde High School,” Childs said. Next action for the UHS wrestlers is scheduled for Jan. 2-3 when they will participate in the Converse Judson Invitational meet.
