More than 1,000 toys and essential items were donated to the Holiday Donation Drive, an effort to support families impacted by immigration enforcement actions across Los Angeles, Mayor Karen Bass announced on Dec. 19. Launched earlier this season, the Holiday Donation Drive invited residents to drop off new toys, books, sports equipment, winter clothing, grocery gift cards and household essentials at city facilities across the region.
“Angelenos showed up in a powerful way,” Bass said in a statement. “Together, we collected more than 1,000 toys and countless essential items that will bring warmth, joy and hope to families who need it most. This is what it looks like when a city comes together, neighbors supporting neighbors and ensuring every child feels seen, valued, and cared for during the holiday season.”
Donations were collected at City Hall and city facilities across Los Angeles, with contributions coming from residents, city employees and community partners.
“We are grateful to Mayor Karen Bass and the City of Los Angeles for thinking of the day laborers, household workers, and their families,” said Meagan Ortiz, executive director of the Instituto de Educación Popular del Sur de California (IDEPSCA). “In a year marked by climate and national political disasters, bringing joy to those most impacted is an important reminder of our shared humanity.”
The items will be distributed through trusted immigrant rights organizations such as CHIRLA, SALEF, IDEPSCA, ImmDef, Proyecto Pastoral, CARECEN, the Clean Car Wash Center and the YMCA to families affected by recent immigration enforcement. These donations aim to ease financial strain while bringing comfort and joy to families and children.
“This effort was about more than gifts,” Bass said. “It was about reminding immigrant families that Los Angeles stands with them — not just during the holidays, but every day.”
The Mayor’s Office extends gratitude to every Angeleno who participated by donating, volunteering and sharing the drive with their community, it said in a news release.
