PHOENIX — Toyota is set to expand its massive vehicle testing site around 50 miles northwest of Phoenix in the town of Wittman.

The site, which is around 11,650 acres, is where the carmaker has tested dozens of Toyota and Lexus vehicles for the North American market since 1993.

What’s changing at the Toyota vehicle testing site northwest of Phoenix?

Toyota recently kicked off construction of several upgrades, including:

  • A new 5.5-mile oval track.
  • New ride and handling surfaces.
  • An off-road park.

Stefan Young, the vice president of research and development for Toyota Motor North America, said the company is investing over $50 million in the construction project.

“The new investment in Arizona signals the facility’s importance to Toyota,” Young said in a company announcement.

The project will also pave the way for new amenities for the testing and development of new vehicle and automotive technology.

“Site updates make it more attractive as an ideal place for companies to test new vehicle capabilities, including by Toyota for our own North American-developed vehicle line-up, thanks to the new and expanded development capabilities,” Young said.
