A 21-year-old man who allegedly left a unit block armed with weapons before leading police on a road pursuit in a stolen vehicle has been arrested inside a Sydney Westfield shopping centre.

Police responded to a report a man with weapons had left a unit block on Reliance Crescent in a red Hyundai hatchback at Willmot in Sydney’s west about 1pm on Monday. A pursuit was initiated about 1.35pm in nearby Hebersham, but was called off shortly after due to safety concerns, while a police helicopter monitored the car until it reached the Mount Druitt Westfield about 2pm.

Police allegedly seized a knife from Nicholas Taylor, 21, after he entered the shopping centre.

He was arrested and taken to Mount Druitt Police Station, where he was charged with driving without a licence, two counts of dangerous driving, failing to stop during a police pursuit, carrying a weapon, possessing a prohibited drug, and driving a vehicle without the consent of the owner.

Police will allege the car was stolen from a business in Richmond on Thursday. Taylor will face court on Tuesday.

Vision from the scene shows police standing on top of a knife and surrounding a man on the ground.

One witness told Nine News he saw a “very long” knife on the man’s body.

“I’m a bit scared. It was the first time I’ve seen that,” he said.
