Manny Machado became the 298th player in Major League history to reach 2,000 career hits on Monday night.

The Padres all-star third baseman needed two hits to get to the milestone, and did so with a first inning single followed by an infield single to lead off the fourth.

After reaching first base Machado tipped his cap to a crowd that rose to its feet to celebrate the accomplishment.

Machado is the first player to log their 2,000th hit in a San Diego uniform since Mike Piazza did it on July 21, 2006. Tony Gwynn did so in 1993, then famously reached 3,000 exactly six years later on August 6th, 1999.

Machado didn’t waste any time beginning his pursuit of baseball’s most famous storied hitting plateau. The 32-year-old belted a solo home run in the eighth inning to reach 2,001.

Of that total, 951 have come since he signed with San Diego. His hit total includes 357 homers and 384 doubles.

His efforts on Monday weren’t enough to lift the Padres to a win. Arizona spoiled Yu Darvish’s first start of 2025, beating the Padres 6-3.
