Bald eagle dies after being hit by vehicle in West Virginia

  • December 30, 2025

JACKSON COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) – A valiant attempt to save a bald eagle that was injured in West Virginia during the weekend did not get the desired outcome.

Deputies with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department responded after they say the bird was hit by a vehicle on U.S. 33. It happened Saturday just outside of Ripley.

They said the driver who hit the bald eagle didn’t stop.

Deputies say the bird was taken to the Avian Conservation Center of Appalachia in Morgantown.

A statement from that group Monday morning said they gave the eagle medications, and a veterinarian had planned to take it into surgery once it was stable, but sadly it died from its injuries. They are thanking everyone who helped with the eagle after it was hit and said they’re sorry they couldn’t save this one.

A federal wildlife officer told WSAZ that since this is believed to have been an accident, they won’t be attempting to identify the driver or pursuing federal criminal charges.
