MAUI, Hawaii (Island News) – Hawaiian Electric has restored electricity to all affected customers, about 330 in parts of Upcountry Maui, impacted by its Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) program.

Overnight crews and additional personnel were working from 6 a.m. on Monday morning to complete inspections of the circuits enabling all customers to be restored.

On Sunday, Hawaiian Electric proactively shut off power to about 330 customers in Upcountry Maui due to high wildfire risk from strong winds and dry conditions.

At 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Hawaiian Electric reported that customers should prepare to be without power overnight through Monday morning. Power will remain off until weather conditions improve and crews can inspect lines and equipment in the area as well as make any repairs if needed.

A PSPS was not necessary on Oahu or Hawaii Island. The high winds have subsided and Hawaiian Electric will continue to monitor the weather.

“We sincerely apologize for the disruption. We have activated our PSPS program as a last line of defense to protect lives and reduce the risk of a wildfire,” said Jim Alberts, Hawaiian Electric senior vice president and chief operating officer.
