CHELTENHAM TOWNSHIP, PA — One of eastern Montgomery County’s busiest roads is getting a study.

Township officials have launched a study on the Cheltenham Avenue corridor, between Paper Mill Road and Ogontz Avenue on the Philadelphia city line.

Officials said they will consider recommendations for roadway configuration on Cheltenham Avenue in an effort to reduce speeding and come up with solutions to make the road safer for people who walk, drive, bike, or roll.

Cheltenham Avenue is a major east-west road in Philadelphia and its suburbs, served by SEPTA bus routes, trolleys, regional rail, and subways.

Cheltenham Avenue serves as the border between Springfield and Cheltenham townships. A section of the road along the Philadelphia border with Cheltenham Township is part of PA Route 309.

Following a busy intersection with Easton Road, Cheltenham Avenue passes the Cedarbrook Shopping Center and the Towers at Wyncote.

Cheltenham Avenue then has another major intersection with Ogontz Avenue at the west end of the PA 309 overlap, as well as the end of the Fort Washington Expressway.

The Greenleaf at Cheltenham shopping center also sits at the northeast corner of this intersection, as well as the Cheltenham-Ogontz Bus Loop, a major terminus for several SEPTA bus routes.

Residents are urged to take a study and add their concerns to the interactive map below:
