NEED TO KNOW

  • George Clooney recently dropped more hints about Ocean’s 14, a sequel to the hit heist trilogy he starred in beginning in 2001

  • The returning characters, teased Clooney, will be “too old to do what we used to do,” but “still smart enough to know how to get away with something”

  • The Jay Kelly star will reportedly be joined by original Ocean’s Eleven cast members Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon and Don Cheadle

George Clooney is putting the old Ocean’s Eleven crew back together. But it sure has been a while.

Ocean’s 14, a fourth film in the heist franchise that began in 2001, is reportedly a go with stars Clooney, Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Don Cheadle and more returning. The gang will be older but wiser, according to a new Variety interview with Clooney, 64.

“There was something about the idea that we’re too old to do what we used to do, but we’re still smart enough to know how to get away with something, that just appeals to me,” the Jay Kelly star told the outlet.

The crew of his mastermind character Danny Ocean — including Pitt’s right-hand man Rusty, Damon’s pickpocket Linus, Cheadle’s demolitions expert Basher and Roberts as Danny’s love interest Tess — have “lost a step” in the new movie, added Clooney. “And they need to find a way to work around their limitations.”

The new Ocean’s movie will also be inspired by Martin Brest’s 1979 movie Going in Style, starring George Burns, Art Carney and Lee Strasberg, about a crew of senior citizen criminals. (Zach Braff remade that film in 2017 with Martin Freeman, Alan Arkin and Michael Caine. Ocean’s Eleven was also a remake, as Steven Soderbergh re-envisioned the original 1960 Ocean’s 11 starring Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and Angie Dickinson.)

“We just got the budget approved at Warner Bros. and we’re trying to set up,” Clooney told E! News in October, confirming members of the original film’s cast are on board. “It’s just scheduling, so it’s just setting a start date for us.” Per Variety, the team behind Ocean’s 14 hopes to start shooting the film next October.

Following the original trilogy, the 2018 spin-off Ocean’s 8 starred Sandra Bullock as Danny’s sister Debbie, plus Cate Blanchett, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, Mindy Kaling and Anne Hathaway. An Ocean’s prequel film centered on Danny’s parents, led by actress-producer Margot Robbie, is also in development.
