BEAUMONT, Texas — A Beaumont man charged in connection with a late-night apartment complex shooting that left a 17-year-old boy dead is being held on a $1.5 million bond, according to court records.

Magistrate Marc Derouen set the bond for 19-year-old Leon Goodman III at $1.5 million with conditions. Police said Goodman was already on felony probation through the Texas Department of Criminal Justice at the time of the incident.

The shooting happened around 11:52 p.m. at Northridge Manor Apartments in the 4100 block of Maida Road. Beaumont police officers were dispatched after reports of shots fired. Before officers arrived, dispatchers were advised that a vehicle was leaving the scene and that a shooting victim may have been transported in the backseat of that vehicle.

Officers established a large crime scene and determined that two separate apartments were involved in the incident. A short time later, officers in the area of Calder Avenue and North 11th Street located the vehicle believed to have left the apartment complex. Police said the vehicle collided with two marked patrol units.

During that encounter, officers found a 17-year-old Black male deceased in the backseat of the vehicle. The car was being driven by a relative of the teen, according to police.

Detectives later identified and located two suspects: a black male juvenile and Goodman. Arrest warrants were obtained for both suspects following interviews with witnesses.
