‘Upon speaking with the driver, officers confirmed cannabis consumption,’ police stated in a release

A North Bay man faces a couple of impaired driving charges following a traffic stop by Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) earlier this week.

On Monday at around 1 p.m., officers say they noticed a vehicle idling in a commercial lot off Highway 11 near McKeown Avenue in North Bay.

“The driver appeared to be smoking cannabis,” OPP stated in a release. “Upon speaking with the driver, officers confirmed cannabis consumption.”

The driver, 41-year-old Martin Funnell, was arrested and taken to the North Bay OPP detachment for further testing. During a search of the vehicle, officers say they also seized unsealed cannabis and unmarked cigarettes.

He has been charged with:

  • Operation while impaired – drugs
  • Operation while impaired – blood drug concentration
  • Driving with cannabis readily available
  • Possession of unmarked cigarettes

Funnell was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in North Bay’s Ontario Court of Justice on Feb. 3, 2026. He also received a 90-day Administrative Driver’s Licence Suspension (ADLS), and his vehicle has been impounded for seven days.
