Two different companies have reported flaring today.

HOUSTON — If you see a flame and smoke on the southeast side of town, it’s likely flaring.

We saw the smoke on the camera on top of our studio in the Galleria area Wednesday afternoon and started looking for the source. The Pasadena Police Department also reported getting calls about it.

What we found is that two companies are reporting flaring.  One is INEOS O&P at 1230 Independence Parkway. The other is INVISTA Houston, which is on Allen Genoa and La Porte.

Both companies said there’s no impact expected to the community.

What is flaring?

Flaring is a process that removes dangerous gases with minimal harm to the environment. It’s used in regulating pressure in chemical plants and also handling natural gas release in wells.

At industrial plants, flare stacks are usually used for burning off flammable gas released by safety valves during unplanned events. Flaring is also used for the planned combustion of gases in short periods of time during startups and shutdowns.
