German tennis icon Boris Becker has praised compatriot Laura Siegemund in glowing terms for reaching the Wimbledon quarter-finals.

“She has made history. What I particularly like is her authentic manner,” the 57-year-old said on his joint podcast with fellow former player Andrea Petkovic.

“There is nothing fake about her; she doesn’t overdo it with her personality. She is just the way she is.”

Siegemund, the last German in the singles draw, faces world number one Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus later on Tuesday at the grass-court classic.

The 37-year-old has never reached the singles semi-finals of a grand slam and entered her first Wimbledon quarter-final as the oldest female player in history to do so.

Becker added: “She knows how to play on grass, which is a lost art. There are not many men or women who can play grass-court tennis anymore, but Laura can. She knows how to move on grass, how much slice and how much aggression she needs to show.”
