The NCAA transfer portal was created seven years ago to “manage and facilitate the process for student-athletes seeking to transfer between member institutions.” It began with a trickle. Now it’s a flood.

About 1,700 FBS players entered the portal during its first full year. More than 4,000 FBS players entered the portal in 2025 across the spring and winter windows. The NCAA eliminated the spring transfer period this year. Players can enter their names in the portal from Jan. 2-16.

The Aztecs had nearly two dozen players enter the portal last year and plucked a similar number from the portal. Coupled with freshmen recruits and a handful of walk-ons, it meant half the Aztecs’ roster turned over from 2024 to 2025. Coaches used to talk about building a program. Now they tralk about building a team. Every year.

Spring classes begin Jan. 19 at SDSU, so a flurry of comings and goings are expected over the next two weeks.

The Union-Tribune will keep track of the activity here.
