Los Angeles Police Department officers shot and killed a man in San Pedro on New Year’s Eve.
At about 9:40 p.m. Wednesday, police were called to the 500 block of West 37th Street for what they called “an unknown trouble, possible restraining order violation” in a news release.
“Upon arrival, officers met with the victim who advised the officers that the suspect, later identified as 39-year-old Lawrence Gonzales, was inside her apartment,” police said.
Gonzales “physically resisted” arrest, then turned violent, eventually trying to disarm the two officers, police said.
At that point, at least one officer opened fire. Gonzales was struck and taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The officers were treated at the hospital for “bruises, cuts and scrapes,” police said. No one else was hurt.
The shooting remains under investigation.
