STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A Staten Island school chorus performed at the inauguration of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

The PS 22 Chorus performed “Over the Rainbow” with actor and singer Mandy Patinkin during the inauguration at City Hall on Jan. 1.

The renowned, Webby award-winning chorus — located at PS 22 in Graniteville — is directed by Gregg Breinberg, who posted on Facebook to share photos of the performance.

“Beyond proud of the PS22 Chorus for its wonderful performance of ‘Over The Rainbow’ with the legendary Mandy Patinkin at the inauguration of our new NYC Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani!!!! An incredible honor to be included in this history-making event!!!” wrote Breinberg on Facebook.

The children entered the stage bundled in winter coats and wearing PS 22 Chorus beanies. They joined 73-year-old Patinkin as he led the song, as students sang around him. Upon completing the performance, students and Patinkin received a thunderous applause and standing ovation, including from Mamdani.

New York City Public Schools posted on social media to thank Mamdani for including “the incredible student chorus from PS 22 on Staten Island” for the inauguration.

“It was so exciting for the kids to sing ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ with actor Mandy Patinkin. Congratulations to our wonderful students on an amazing performance!” wrote NYC Public Schools.

You can watch the performance during the inauguration video below at the 20-minute mark.

The PS 22 Chorus has been involved in several national performances, including: the televised White House Christmas tree lighting in 2009; the 2011 Academy Awards with a rendition of “Over the Rainbow,” and Phillip Phillips’ “Home” at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in 2012. The chorus also sang four songs at former President Obama’s second inauguration prelude in 2013.

In 2018, Carrie Underwood’s music video for “The Champion” featured a 2012 clip of PS 22 Chorus students. In 2019, the chorus sang at UNICEF’s World Children’s Day event at the United Nations.

In 2024, singer/songwriter Andy Grammer visited PS 22 for a live performance of his new song, “Magic,” which is a track from his album, “MONSTER.”
