American Mattress, a well-known furniture chain based in suburban Chicago with nearly 100 stores across Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Florida and Missouri, has filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy, a petition filed with the U.S. Department of Justice showed.
The mattress store filed for Chapter 11 protection Sunday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware, the petition said. The filing which lists both assets and liabilities between $1 million and $10 million, is under American Mattress’ corporate name, AFM Mattress Company LLC, with an address listed in Elk Grove Village.
According to the website, American Mattress was founded in 1988 in the Chicago area and remains family owned and operated. The mattress and furniture brand carries a variety of mattresses and other bedding, including pillows, bed frames, sheets and more.
“The sleep industry has changed over the past 30 years, but the American Mattress brand has never wavered from its original beginnings and remains a symbol for unmatched customer service and the highest quality product offerings,” the website said.
The filing comes after several popular retailers declared bankruptcy in recent months, including popular crafting store Joann’s, Party City, and movie theater chain CMX.
American Mattress did not immediately respond to NBC Chicago’s request for comment.
