A breathtaking sight unfolded along the Des Moines River this weekend, where KCCI viewer Carson Galloway captured striking images of bald eagles soaring overhead and diving for fish in the heart of downtown Des Moines.Galloway says the skies were especially busy, estimating that nearly 40 eagles were gathered in the area during his visit.Wildlife officials say scenes like this are becoming more common. According to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, roughly 2,400 bald eagles make their home along the Des Moines River, relying on its open waters for winter foraging. Statewide, Iowa’s bald eagle population continues to thrive, with the DNR estimating nearly 5,800 eagles across the state in its most recent midwinter survey conducted in January 2025.
