Phoenix police responded to reports of a shooting at a business near 19th Avenue and Bell Road around 1:30 p.m. last Friday, and found two men with gunshot wounds outside a barber shop. Both were rushed to the hospital, where 25-year-old Manuel Fonseca died a short time later. The other man, whose name has not been released, remains hospitalized.
Officers soon learned that the two men had been shot during a fight with others, who witnesses said sped away in a black Chevrolet Suburban. According to court documents, both victims were also armed, and they had young children with them who witnessed the shooting.
A witness provided video to police showing the SUV involved and its license plate, which was traced to a home in a neighborhood less than two miles north of the shooting scene. Detectives spotted a different black SUV there and set up surveillance before following the vehicle to another home near 51st Avenue and Bell Road in Glendale.
There, investigators saw the black Suburban parked in the backyard. Police followed the suspects back to the original home, where they were both arrested that night.
According to court documents, Daniel told detectives that he and his two brothers drove to a smoke shop next door to the barber shop when another man with a gun holstered on his hip “began talking s*** to him.”
Daniel said they began fighting with the man, before another man came out of the barber shop and started shooting at him and his brothers.
He reportedly said he shot back at the two men in self-defense, but said he was unsure if anyone was hit.
Police also spoke with Ricky, who was reportedly driving the Suburban, and he reportedly gave a different account of what led to the shooting. Per documents, Ricky said he and Daniel’s other brother saw a blue truck parked in front of the barber shop that belonged to a man who was involved with a woman he had previously dated.
The other brother reportedly told Ricky that “they were going to get him.” Documents say he told police that Daniel and the third brother got out of the SUV and tried to sneak up on the other man, who was standing outside the barber shop. The man saw them approaching, and they began arguing before it escalated into a physical fight and a shooting.
The third brother was wounded during the shooting and later drove himself to a hospital. Per protocol, medical staff called police, but responding officers didn’t know at the time that the man was a suspect in the earlier shooting. Documents say that as the officers walked out of the hospital to make phone calls, the man snuck out of the hospital and has not been found.
Police served a search warrant at the brothers’ home and found guns in a safe believed to have been used in the shooting. Investigators believe Daniel and the third brother fired shots, but that Ricky did not.
Daniel remains jailed on a $1 million bond. Arizona’s Family is not naming the third brother since he has not been arrested or charged at this time.
