Mormon church submits permit to build massive $27 million temple in Jacksonville

  • July 8, 2025

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is working to build a massive $27 million temple in the Mandarin area.

The nearly 29,000 square-foot building is planned for a 6.6-acre site at 3323 Loretto Road.

The Jacksonville temple has plans for a basement, main level and mechanical mezzanine. The permit is being reviewed and the zoning review is pending.

City records show the Church bought the land for $7.2 million in 2024.

A second phase of the plan will feature a 20-lot subdivision, according to the Jacksonville Business Journal.

President Russell M. Nelson announced the temple in 2022.

The four other temples that are announced, under construction or in operation in Florida are the Fort Lauderdale Temple, Orlando Temple, Tallahassee Temple and the Tampa Temple.

A temple is different from a church. Latter-day Saints believe that temples are the most sacred places on Earth and differ from churches designated for public weekly worship services.

There are nearly 173,000 Latter-day Saints, also known as Mormons, in over 270 congregations in Florida, according to a news release.
