SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — A call about a vehicle fire ends in the arrest of a man who is now facing animal cruelty charges.

The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office says they were called to the 600 block of Kayroe Drive Thursday about a vehicle that was in flames.

When they arrived, they found a dead chicken, along with dozens more injured birds and evidence that cockfighting had taken place at the scene.

Deputies also located three severely malnourished dogs.

They arrested Aundra Mathis on three counts of animal cruelty.

Deputies found evidence at the scene indicating Mathis had previously strangled a dog and provoked the chickens to fight.

BCSO says Mathis denied living at the property and being the owner of the dogs, but did admit to owning some of the chickens.

Animal Control has taken custody of the animals.
