A crease on a foldable smartphone is something that we have been forced to embrace because of technological limitations, and while manufacturers have utilized every resource at their disposal to mitigate it, this blight is likely the reason why Apple has held its hand from launching its own version quickly. However, during CES 2026, Samsung demonstrated a crease-free display on a foldable smartphone, suggesting a bright future for upcoming models. Also, given that the iPhone Fold has been reported to have achieved a design milestone by eliminating this crease, we have a strong feeling that this technology will debut later this year.
An iPhone Fold competitor from Samsung is reportedly in development, but it is unconfirmed whether it will ship with the company’s crease-free display technology
Pictures of a demo unit with the crease-free display were shown by tipster Ice Universe, with the unnamed Samsung device completely unfolded and placed flat on a desk. From the angle shown in the image above, there is no visible crease, but there is also no information on how Samsung achieved this feat. For years, the Korean manufacturer has been making its foldable smartphones thinner and lighter, but has so far failed to eliminate the crease. What has changed now?
Earlier, we reported that Apple ran into some technical challenges with the iPhone Fold involving its crease-free design and was testing various Ultra-Thin Flexible Glass technologies (UFG) to overcome this obstacle. While the following isn’t confirmed, it is entirely possible that both Apple and Samsung have been developing this unique form of glass, because the Korean behemoth is also reported to compete with the iPhone Fold with its own ‘Wide Fold’ version that will flaunt a passport-style form factor during its scheduled fall 2026 launch.
Differences between a crease-free design and a smartphone with crease
However, Ice Universe mentions that the crease-free design can only be adopted if Samsung’s Mobile Experience (MX) division is willing to pay the premium required. Unfortunately, the same sector is currently grappling with increased DRAM costs, which will force it to reportedly increase the Galaxy S26 lineup’s price and the cost of the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Flip 8. In short, it appears that the iPhone Fold will be the first device to ship with a crease-free design, but let us keep our fingers crossed for the future.
